Henry & Roger: IWMT Revitalize HK Christian Music // 我們為活化香港基督教音樂而活
Brothers Henry & Roger Chung share their heart for the Hong Kong Christian Music scene.
Hello everyone, I am Henry Chung.
I am Roger Chung.
We are the Chung Brothers.
We were made to revitalize the Christian Music in Hong Kong.
What is the meaning of this in Chinese?
We want to readjust the Christian music in Hong Kong,
or to add in some new thinking.
When we were growing up in Sunday school,
we would sing some worship songs,
These worship songs were very nice,
but a lot of very interesting situations would happen.
For example, “God’s mercy” would be sung in a pitch that made it sound like “God’s dementia”.
It sounded like dementia.
But in the 80s, there is a group of passionate young composers,
who started a “Let’s Sing New Songs” Movement in Hong Kong.
They composed some Cantonese worship songs in which the words were on the right pitch.
To the churches back then, these songs were an innovation.
It was after we listened to those songs,
We also grew up in the 80s…
We felt that those songs really touched our hearts.
We felt like we should create some new songs,
to give the audience,
Christians or non-Christians, another option
because the Bible says in Pslam that
we will sing new songs to Jesus.
But I am of the view that
new songs can mean injecting new elements, new thinking
and new texture into the old songs.
We used some styles that are less commonly used in churches to create our own songs.
To spread the good news, the Gospel,
I believe that the music format is not important,
because music is actually God’s creation.
Our songs are not focused on praise and worship,
But there is certainly an element of praise and worship in them.
I think that you don’t need to be in front of a band to praise and worship God.
You can worship God even when you are at home,
Brushing your teeth, using the bathroom or cooking a meal.
Indeed, we don’t want to formalize praise and worship.
Lastly, I would like to conclude with the Word of Jesus.
Jesus told us to spread the good news, His Gospel,
from Jerusalem to Samaria,
to the end of the world to be His testimony.
We are actually using music as our testimony.
We believe that the Gospel message is in the music.
It can be spread.
We don’t want to limit the listening and singing of these songs within churches.
It should not be like that.
We need to walk out from the four walls of the church.
We need to sing to the non-Christians,
we need to tell the non-Christians
about how wonderful Jesus’s Gospel is.
So to us, music is a tool to spread the Gospel.
In order to make a good testimony,
first, we need to make good music.
Hello，I am Henry.
